My Goals For 2015

I'm setting a number of goals again, but this time they're designed to help me take better care of myself and to put more energy and focus on to less pursuits.

Last year was very speculative and very varied, which is very good! But now that I have a better idea of what I like and don't like, and more importantly what I'm good at and not good at, it's time to really use my time in 2015 effectively.

I want to be healthy and productive this year. I also want a quieter year! Here's how I hope to achieve that:

Dry January
As of New Year's Day I'm operating under a strict no-alcohol policy. By the end of January, if I feel I can do another month, I'll go for February too. I'm going to take it month by month.

If I decide to have a drink and quit I won't berate myself - a month or two off is still good for you. But, by breaking it down month by month there's a chance I'll surprise myself and just keep going.

The reason for doing this is that it will save me money and also give me time. So much time is wasted by being hungover. I personally find that I can't think clearly or act productively at all. I resent that lost time - and money!

#PitchSlapWednesday
This is a hashtag for freelancers and is sort of a joke, but the idea behind it is to encourage freelancers to get into the habit of regular pitching. This is something I'm terrible at - just organising myself generally I find a real challenge.

I may not pick Wednesdays, but I'm going to make a habit of pitching for jobs once a week.

Stretching
I used to stretch every day, and I fell out of this habit in 2014. I think it's extremely important to look after yourself physically, and recently I haven't been very good at it.

That combined with the weight I gained as a result of winter eating, less exercise and the contraception I was on, has left me feeling sluggish and not myself. I'm determined to lose the weight I've gained, because I can feel my confidence dropping as a result.

I want to take up running and yoga again too, but feel it's good to start small initially.

Keep writing
This blog, local magazines, Social Sheffield, lists, my diary, letters.

I'm going to continue to write as much as possible. To get better at it, I need to do it. Every single day!

Reading, reading, reading
This is something else I haven't given enough time to this year.

I plan to start going to bed earlier during the week, so that I can get half an hour's reading time in.

More water, more sleep
There was a period of about four months in the last half of 2014 where I was getting around five hours of sleep a night and drinking about one glass of water a day.

I was just so busy and trying to do so much. I'd be up at 7.00am, go to work, in at 6.00pm, then back to work either freelancing or working on voluntary projects, or out to meetings.

I wasn't getting to bed until after midnight on a regular basis. That cannot be repeated this year, it's an unhealthy way to function - and I wasn't functioning very well!

Keep on saving
This is a goal I set every year! I'm okay at saving money - saving for my travels was what really made me a lot better, but there's still room for improvement.

This year I plan to put away less, but put these smaller amounts away more consistently. I found Daisy's money management post very useful, and after reading it set myself up with a fixed 12 month savings account, to go alongside my ISA.

So these are my goals! I know I might not achieve all of them, but as long as I'm consciously trying to make small changes as a result of them, then that's progress!

What are your goals for 2015?
