Pho Chu The

Everyone loves beef pho.  The light fragrance of the spring onions, the soft and juicy beef and the crisp taste of the watery soup.  In Melbourne, Richmond is the best place to go to be spoilt for choice on Vietnamese cuisine.  Before deciding where to go, I asked a Vietnamese guy at work where he would recommend and he said Pho Chu The.  Decision made.

On Saturday night, I met fellow poms Jess and Phil at the restaurant on Victoria Street for a catch up over cans of coke, cups of tea and chopsticks.

Tables set like make me miss South East Asia
Phil ambitiously went for a large portion.  He didn't conquer his ambition.
Jess and I on the other hand, went for a medium.
Which was still too much for me to finish - small next time!

Full satisfied we paid around 10-12 dollars each (yep, you can eat out for less than 20 dollars in Melbourne!) and went off for a night cap on Bridge Road.

The Asian restaurants you get on this section of Victoria Street are often much cheaper (and arguably better) than the ones on Little Bourke in the CBD.  It's also nicer to go somewhere that isn't as busy, everyone knows about China Town, but only locals know about places like this and in my experience they're always much better.  I do advise going on a very empty stomach, try as I might I just couldn't eat it all.  'The' is the name of the man who runs this restaurant, as you'll see from the about section on his website he's very passionate about delivering good pho to the people of Melbourne.

There are three restaurants, one in Footscray, one in Box Hill and one in Richmond.  To get here from where I live, I caught a tram straight up Chapel St (either the 78 or 79) and got off at the end of the line on stop 65 - Pho Chu The is just to your left a few steps down the road as you get off.
